Gratefulness, thankfulness, and appreciation are ways in which we express ourselves when we receive a benefit. We end each yoga class by thanking our teachers, students, friends and family for their support and encouragement and for helping us grow and become the best person we can possibly be. Cultivating gratitude is one of the highest virtues of yoga!
But why is gratitude so important? Because it makes us happy! Grateful people are happier, less depressed, less stressed, and more satisfied with their lives. Grateful people tend to think more positively and cope better when life throws a challenge their way. Grateful people also sleep better, possibly because they think more positive thoughts just before going to sleep.
According to Cicero, “Gratitude is not only the greatest of the virtues but the parent of all others.”
The relationship between gratitude and “feeling good” applies not just to the individual but to ALL beings involved. So just by being grateful, everything around you will benefit and thrive as a result of your positivity. So keep being grateful and watch the world around you change for the better!
